Acupuncture is an energetic system of traditional healing that
originated in China. While acupuncture is relatively new to the West, it is one of the oldest and most widely used systems of medicine in the world and has been in practice for more that 3,000 years. The Chinese observed that the life force, Ch'i (pronounced chee), moves in cycles according to natural laws that apply to everything, including the human body. When Ch'i is moving smoothly, a person will experience wellness and harmony. When the movement of Ch'i is restricted or blocked, the disharmony in the body will cause specific symptoms to appear. Imagine a stream where a tree has fallen creating a dam. On the upstream side of the dam, there is excess which is pushing and causing pain. On the downstream side there is deficiency, causing stagnation which can also result in pain. With the use of hair-thin needles inserted gently into specific points on the body, the acupuncturist can signal the body to make an adjustment in the flow of Ch'i, thereby allowing the body to begin the healing process. In effect, the needles take the tree out of the river so that it can flow smoothly again. One of the most important aspects of acupuncture is that it is holistic, meaning that you are treated as a complete being - body, mind and spirit - not just a symptom to be fixed. Everything is connected - your physical symptoms, your emotional state, your stress level, and your environment - and all must be taken into consideration in designing effective treatment. By addressing all aspects of your health and treating the root cause of the problem as well as the symptom, more effective and long-term healing can occur. So, if we can determine what caused the tree to fall (i.e., there is not enough earth to hold it or it is not getting enough sun or water), then the underlying imbalance can be addressed and corrected. Acupuncture has been shown to improve the functioning of the immune system. As a result, people often report that they get sick less often and if they do get sick, they recover more quickly. 910.599.3081 shiningsea@ec.rr.com What is Acupuncture? |
