Your first acupuncture appointment will last approximately 1.5 hours
and will include a detailed health/social history and a treatment. This is a time for me to get to know you so that I might determine how I can best serve you. I will ask about your current symptoms and especially what effects them. For example: Does it feel better with cold or warmth? Does it feel better or worse with pressure? It is important to give me as complete a picture of your health status as you can. This is a safe place to share what is really on your mind. Your privacy is very important to me and I abide by a strict code of ethics concerning confidentiality. Subsequent treatments last from 45 minutes to 1 hour. We will discuss any changes you have noticed since your last treatment and address any new issues that may have arisen. I normally recommend scheduling 4-5 weekly visits to begin. These early treatments are clearing and cumulative in nature and will allow us to evaluate the effectiveness of the treatments. If you are experiencing severe, acute symptoms I may recommend more frequent treatment during the first few weeks. Acupuncture needles are very thin, sterile, disposable and used only once. Everyone is different, so it is difficult to say what any one person might experience. Some people feel very little sensation when the needles are inserted. Others might feel a radiating feeling of warmth or movement. If there is a sensation of discomfort, this should last no more that a second or two.
Why should I see an acupuncturist?
Most people begin acupuncture because of a wide range of physical symptoms. One of the things that acupuncture has been known to do is to help us recover and cultivate the natural healing ability of our body. By living in harmony with nature and tuning in to what our body is telling us, we can attain and maintain better health. Acupuncture has also been shown to improve the immune system and help it to function more efficiently. What if I'm not ill? Great! Many people come for acupuncture to maintain their health, to deepen their relationships, to be more effective in whatever they do, and to feel more balanced. With regular treatment, acupuncture is a potent preventative tool. How frequently will I need to come? Generally, you will be seen weekly for 4-5 visits. During this time, you should notice positive changes in the way you feel. As clients begin to see improvements in their symptoms, treatments will be extended to every 2 weeks, then 3 weeks, monthly and then eventually seasonally. How much does acupuncture cost? The initial visit is $110 and subsequent visits are $75. Is acupuncture covered by insurance? A growing number of insurance companies will reimburse for acupuncture treatments. Consult your insurer for the terms of coverage on your policy. Full payment is required at the time of treatment and I will give you a receipt that you can then submit to your insurance carrier for reimbursement. What to Expect? FAQ 1306 N.
